Where Aspirations Meet Achievement

Why the Nano-ceramics show better properties than their ceramic counterpart?

Photo of author

In the modern era Nano-ceramics play an important role in society and show better properties like low cost, improved mechanical properties, thermal stability and fire resistance like steel, and substantial resistance against compression and bending than their ceramic counterparts due to exceptionally grounded small particles size that gives them a non-porous structure and a high surface area. Further the properties of Nano-ceramics vary significantly from one size to another, which can be measured by surface characterization methods such as X-ray Diffraction analysis, Infrared Spectroscopy. Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, etc.

Applications of ceramic materials

Ceramic offer many advantages as compared to other materials. They are harder and stiffer than steel; more heat and corrosion resistant than metals or polymers; less dense tan most metals and their alloys; and their raw materials are both plentiful and inexpensive. Ceramic materials display a wide range of properties which facilitate their use in many different product areas. Ceramics have application in the following areas:

Aerospace

Ceramics are used in the formation of parts of space shuttle, rockets and space stations.

Consumer Usage

Ceramics have great usage in our homes like glassware, pottery, dinnerware and some electronics.

Automotive Industry

Ceramics are widely used in automotive industry. For example, catalytic converters, filters, motors, valves, spark plugs, thermostats, piston rings, etc. are ceramics.

Medical(Bio ceramics)

Ceramics are used in medical field especially in dental and one fillingand in one implant.

Military

Structural components for ground, air and naval vehicles of military are made from ceramics.

Computers and Electronics

Computer parts like insulators, resistors, superconductors, capacitors, etc. are made up of ceramics.

Abrasives

Abrasives are used for grinding, cutting, polishing, of materials. Abrasives are natural (garnet, diamond) and synthetic (silicon carbide, diamond, fused alumni). These are all ceramics.

Building and Construction

Manufactures use ceramics to make bricks, titles, piping and other construction materials.

Coatings

Because ceramic materials are more corrosion-resistance than most metals, manufactures often coat metal with ceramic enamel.
