Objectives of Forest Classification in Pakistan

Basis of Conventional Forest Classification

The forests of Pakistan are classified on the basis of the following factors:

1. Climate

Elevation significantly influences vegetation types—from mangroves at sea level to alpine forests in the high mountains.

3. Physiography (Landform)

Mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys, and coastal zones contribute to unique forest formations.

Soil fertility, texture, and moisture availability help classify forests into irrigated plantations, riverine forests, and dry forests.

5. Hydrology

Distribution of Forests in Pakistan

Pakistan’s forests cover nearly 4–5% of the total land area and are unevenly distributed due to diverse climate and geography. The main forest types include:

1. Coniferous Forests (Northern Pakistan)

Mainly found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliat, Azad Kashmir.

Sub-types:
  • Himalayan Moist Temperate Forests (Deodar, Fir, Spruce)

  • Pine Forests (Chir Pine forests at lower altitudes)

  • Sub-Alpine and Alpine Forests (Juniper and Birch at high altitudes)

2. Subtropical Broadleaf and Subtropical Pine Forests

Located in KP, Punjab Salt Range, Potohar Plateau, AJK.

Species: Olive, Acacia, Wild pistachio, Chir pine.

Importance: Fuelwood, fodder, soil conservation on steep slopes.

1. Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests

Found in Punjab plains, KP foothills, northern Sindh.

Species: Shisham, Kikar (Acacia nilotica), Ber.

Importance: Agricultural land shelterbelts, fodder, fuelwood.

4. Tropical Thorn (Scrub) Forests

Widespread in Punjab plains, KP plains, Balochistan, and Sindh under low rainfall.

Species: Acacia, Prosopis, Zizyphus.

Importance: Grazing, fuelwood, rangeland support.

5. Riverine (Bela) Forests

Along the Indus River and its tributaries, mainly in Sindh and southern Punjab.

Species: Babul, Poplar, Dalbergia.

Importance: Flood control, timber, fuelwood.

6. Irrigated Plantations

Located in Punjab, Sindh, and KP near canal systems.

Species: Eucalyptus, Shisham, Poplar, Acacia.

Importance: Commercial wood production and afforestation of barren land.

7. Mangrove Forests

Found along the coastal belt of Sindh (Karachi, Indus Delta) and sparsely in Balochistan.

Main species: Avicennia marina (dominant).

Importance: Coastal protection, fisheries support, biodiversity conservation.

8. Juniper Forests (Dry Temperate)

Located in Ziarat, Kalat, and other highlands of Balochistan.

Species: Juniper excelsa.

Importance: Rare, slow-growing forests important for ecology and climate regulation.
