Animals have some amazing adaptations that help them live in even the most hostile environments. For example, Camels. They can survive in some of the world’s hottest and driest environments. Because of the thick leathery patches on their knees, they are protected from burns when they kneel on hot sand. In addition to being able to drink 32 gallons of water at once, they can go a whole week without drinking any. They can save water by not sweating as much because their body temperature is between 93 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit. To keep every drop of water in, the spongy bones in their noses absorb any extra moisture, resulting in dry air upon exhalation.
Cold-blooded animals do not maintain a constant body temperature. They get their heat from the outside environment, so their body temperature fluctuates, based on external temperatures. If it is 50oF outside, their body temperature will eventually drop to 50oF, as well. If it rises to 100oF, their body temperature will reach 100oF. Most of the rest of the animal kingdom except birds and mammals are cold-blooded.
Cold-blooded animals, also known as ectothermic animals, depend on outside sources to control their body temperature. Because the environment has a direct impact on how their bodies function, their metabolic rate drops when the temperature drops. Their activity levels, digestion, and mobility are all impacted by their slowness. They become lethargic in cold weather because their bodies are unable to produce enough levels.
